Chapel Mosque of Our Lady of Grace Archidona
In the IX century Archidona reaches its period of greates splendor, been the capital of the Cora Rayya. That century, the city is one of the enclaves of Omar Ben Hafsun revolt, who put in check the Umayyad caliphate. From this period dates the mosque, the building where Abderraman I was proclaimer emir.
In 1462 Pedro Téllez de Girón, Gran Master of the Calatrava Order, takes the city and offer his banner saying “I give in Grace”.
Of ancient fortress remain only the walls, the Puerta del Sol, the Aljibe and the Chapel. The chapel was reformed after the conquest to suit the aesthetics of the Christian churches (XVII and XVIII) and expand its capacity. All this set in the Sierra de la Virgen de Gracia, declared Peri Park.
Our Lady of Grace is patron of Archidona since the XVII century. Every first Saturday of September is down to the Parish od Santa Ana and returns to its chapel Sunday next week. Also procession the “Día de la Oruga” in May.
