Jimena de la Frontera Bell Tower
Jimena de la Frontera Bell Tower
The Bell Tower is located in the Plaza de la Constitución, in the Cadiz town of Jimena de la Frontera.
During the 17th century, the church of San Sebastián was founded, which would adopt the name of Church of Santa María la Coronada in the last third of the 18th century. This church, of which currently only its bell tower remains, would displace the Church of Misericordia, located near the Castle of Jimena de la Frontera, as the parish center of the Villa de Jimena.
Regarding its architecture, its execution followed the architectural tradition carried out in the construction of other temples in the city, as in the case of the tower of the current Church of Victory or the towers that were built in the Monastery of the Angels. The lower part of the tower appears completely flat and whitewashed on the outside, while the upper part of the bell tower is made of exposed brick.
The first reference to the church is from the year 1690 and we find it in the book by Fray Jerónimo de la Concepción, in which he speaks of Cádiz and its province.
From the year 1736 dates a correspondence that denounces the poor state in which the building is due to multiple existing clay on the slope on which the town sits. Such is the seriousness and danger of collapse that it entails, that in 1947 demolition works were undertaken on the building, with the exception of its bell tower, which luckily was not in danger of collapsing.
