Lebrija – Old Cabildo and Cilla Municipal
Old Cabildo and Cilla Municipal
The Old Cabildo and Cilla Municipal is located next to the Santa Maria de la Oliva Church, at the Rector Merina Square and just before you go up the the Lebrija Medieval Castle, in the Andalusian town of Lebrija.
Only the facade of the old Cabildo (former Town Hall) and Cilla Municipal (former public granary) still survive.
The location of this building in this place dates back to the beginning of the 16th century, enlarging the facilities later in 1587 with the purchase of some nearby houses. The façade, keeping still the original coat of arms, was built during this time. It´s a sober façade, carved in stone and of Mannerist style, with a inscription in the lintel where we can read the initial words of the Book of Wisdom, whose transcription is: “Love justice, you who judge the earth”.
Even though a big part of the place is rebuilt at the beginning of the 18th century, it won´t be the Chapter House headquarters during the 19th century due to the tumbledown condition of the buildings.
