Alcaucín, Axarquía Region

The town of Alcaucín is located in the side of Sierra de Tejeda dominating the Axarquía, the corridor of Periana and the gorge of the hole in Zafarraya. Surrounded by hills with olive trees, vineyards and pines, Alcaucin has the typical appearance of the involved white towns in La Axarquía. In this town we can find Neanderthal human remains, but it was during the Muslim Age when the area started to be inhabited like we can observe in the remains of the castle of Zalía.

Besides its monuments, you can visit the Parque Natural de Sierra del Alcázar, perfectly equipped to go camping. The town of Alcaucin is rich in medicinal (spring of Las Majadas) and mineral waters (spring of El Espino…). For the lovers of hiking, they could travel the itinerary of La Ruta del Santo that leads to the peak of La Maroma, in Sierra de Tejeda, nowadays Nature Reserve.
