Pila de la Carrera Fountain – Alhama de Granada

Pila de la Carrera Fountain useful information.

Street Water Trough: It was built by the Economic Company of Friends of the Country in 1851. Presently, the fountain is situated to the left of the Church of Carmen, near the castle. It is a fountain composed of two  large basins used as a water trough by animals and the middle pillar crowned by a Neo-classical floron which two water taps fill the basins with lyrical water sounds.

This fountain is currently located to the left of the Iglesia del Carmen, very close to the gorge and a path that goes down to it. This fountain, like the others, received water directly from the spring called Nacimiento (in the Sierra de Játar), although it is currently chlorinated.

The fountain is structured with a central pillar, cubic in shape and topped by an ornament in the shape of a pineapple. At its base there are two pipes, one at the front and one at the rear (according to the orientation of the sketch). The water from the pipes falls into a stone structure that has the purpose of serving as a base for filling the containers and, on the other hand, receiving the water and directing it towards the two circular pylons that are located to the right and left of this structure. central. To better access these structures (which are located on both sides of the fountain -front and back-) there is a small step at its feet, between the two pylons. These two large pylons have an overflow on their front, with a slit on the edge, the water falling into holes in the ground that direct it to the drain. In the middle of the central stem there is a memorial card of its foundation.

The fountain is built entirely of well-carved stone. The entire environment of the fountain is cobbled. A central cubic stem or pinnacle, topped by a pineapple-shaped ornament (as described by the author Raya Retamero). In the middle of this structure there is a cartouche that reads: “The Economic Society of Friends of the Country of this city / in memory of its first director Don Francisco de Toledo y Muñoz. Year 1851.

The entire fountain itself is worthy of significance, due to the unusual nature of its elements, especially the fact that the pylons do not receive water directly from the spout, but instead have an intermediate stone element that, in turn, served as a very comfortable to support the pitchers or other containers for filling. Also the shape of the pylons, completely round and large. Read more…
