Sanctuary of the Santisima Virgen del Mar
The Sanctuary of the Santisima Virgen del Mar is located a the Virgen del Mar Square, near the Parish Church of San Sebastián, Parish Church of Santiago Apostol and the Parish Church of San Pedro, in the monumental city of Almeria, Andalucia, Spain.
The Catholic Monarchs founded the Royal Convent of Santo Domingo in 1492. The temple was built in the second quarter of the 16th century, a period of transition from Gothic to Renaissance, being the oldest part of the old convent that remains. At the beginning of the 18th century, the construction of the cloister was carried out, finished in 1728, and later the sacristy in 1764.
When the convent was abolished in 1835, its church continued to live independently from the secularized complex, maintaining its religious function, since the capitular vicar kept the church open. This stage was short because, in 1841, the City Council agreed to close the temple to the public so that it could serve as a chapel for the College of Humanities that worked in the old convent (School of Applied Arts and Artistic Crafts).
Shortly after, in 1844, the church was reopened for worship to continue venerating the image of the patron saint of the city, the Virgin of the Sea, being from then on governed by secular priests until 1899 when it was handed over again. to the Dominicans, who returned to Almería, and built a new convent next to the old disentailed one.
After suffering a fire in 1936, it was restored in 1940 according to a project by Guillermo Langle Rubio and the façade was rebuilt by Pedro Bértiz García.
