Almuñécar – Roman Aqueduct

The Roman Aqueduct is located in Plaza Mayor (Mayor Square), in the Andalusian town of Almuñécar, Granada.

Built in the 1st century A.D., Almuñecar´s Roman aqueduct comprises five sections, that form a seven kilometers route. Alon its path different arcades were built to adapt to the natural topography of the land.

Its impressive construction ws a response to the water requirements of the town, Sexi Firmun Iulium, and especially those of the local fish salting industry.

Section V of the aqueduct, also supplied water to the thermal baths located next to it.

La Carrera Roman Aqueduct, Section V

La Carrera aqueduct, the closest section of the Roman aqueduct to the old town of Almuñécar, is part of one of the major civil engineering works of Roman Hispania. There have been several arcaheological excavations undertaken during which a hundred meters of its rout have been discovered.

The main road from Carthago Nova to Malaca, called the Via Augusta (formerly the Via Herculea), passed under its manin archway, one of seventeen in this stretch.

Chronologically, different studies completed on the aqueduct have fixed its date of completion in the first half of the first century A.D., coinciding with a period of strong urban redevelopment in the town.
