Royal Collegiate Church of Santa Maria la Mayor

The Royal Collegiate Church of Santa Maria la Mayor is located next to the Citadel, in the Andalusian town of Antequera, Málaga province.

This magnificent temple was built between 1515 and 1550, without the author of the original project being known, which was later continued by different architects, including Diego de Vergara.

The interior responds to the type of columnar church that, except in this diocese, is not common in Andalusia. It has a basilica floor plan with three naves separated by columns of the Ionic order on which round arches decorated with pomas or pearls dance; to make the central nave higher, discharge arches are superimposed as a false blind clerestory. The three naves are covered with Mudejar wooden frameworks, the central one being rectangular, with abundant bow decoration, and the octagonal side ones with similar decoration.

The main chapel, rectangular in depth, is covered with Gothic-Mudejar ribs and has Florentine-type windows. Its layout is due to Diego de Vergara.

The main façade follows the model of the Roman triumphal arch and is considered -along with the Sacra Capilla del Salvador de Úbeda- as the only two completely composed façades of the Andalusian Renaissance. Read more…
