Ardales – Nuestra Señora de Villaverde Chapel
Nuestra Señora de Villaverde Chapel – Ardales
This chapel is located between the steep cliffs of Almorchón and the vertical walls of Mesas de Villaverde, where the Mozarabic city of Bobastro was located.
Next to the current chapel, reformed in the sixties in the last century, a cemetery was found with anthropomorphic tombs from the Mozarabic Age dug out in the rocks.
Opposite the chapel, there is a headland that has the remains of a watchtower, better known as the Peñón del Moro, which emphasizes the importance of the site.
Probably, the old chapel was one of the churches outside Bobastro, as the sources point out.
Until the twenties in the last century, there were celebrations for Moorish and Christians. Nowadays, there is still a celebration (the 8th September), the pilgrimage mass in honour to the Villaverde Virgin, patron of Ardales, who, according to tradition, appeared after the Christian conquest here.
