Atalaya Dam and Reservoir – Bombaron Reservoir

Atalaya Dam was built in 1983 on the bed of the Arroyo de la Atalaya, municipality of Villamiel, near the municipalities of Cilleros, Hoyos and Perales del Puerto.

Homogeneous loose materials dam type with a crest lenght of 192 meters and a height from foundations of 16 meters.

The Atalaya Reservoir has a capacity of 0,450 hm3 and belong to the Cuenca del Tajo (Tajo River Basin).

Villamiel Municipality

The municipality of Villamiel in Extremadura is located in the northwest of the province of Cáceres, forming part of the Sierra de Gata region, near the border with Castilla y León.

Villamiel is located on the slopes of the Sierra de la Cachaza, its town center is made up of steep alleys. Of its religious architecture, the Dean’s Palace (17th century) and the Magdalena church (16th century) should be highlighted. It has a Baroque main altarpiece and a carving of San Pedro Celestino. Popular phrases about life and death can be seen on its walls. Also of interest are the hermitages of La Piedad (16th century) and La Soledad. The women of the town have preserved the game of giving the choqui, in which a larger ball hits a smaller one.

Its district, Trevejo, was a Muslim fortress in the 13th century, and its medieval center has been declared of Tourist Interest. You can visit the ruins of the castle and the temple of San Juan Bautista, from the 16th century.
