Belmez

Belmez – Alto Guadiato Region

Belmez is a Northern town of the Alto Guadiato, to the west from Córdoba, that has a landscape with meadows of holm oaks, pasturelands and lands of cereals, where we can observe the mining activity that was so important in the history of the region.

The town is a compact group of traditional houses located at the foot of a crag crowned by a castle from where you can observe a vast outlook.

Its origins go back to after the conquest of Córdoba by Fernando III. It is then when having inhabitants from Fuente Obejuna and around a pre-existing castle gathers the first centre of population.

In 1250 the Concejo de Córdoba shared out its municipal area and after then Belmez turned into an archdeaconship.

In 1449 Juan II gave to Gutiérrez de Sotomayor 400 vassals from Belmez who establishes his control over the town. This situation will last until 1453, year in which his jurisdiction is recovered by Córdoba.

In 1458 Enrique IV donates Belmez to Pedro Téllez. Two years after the town is given in favour of Pedro Girón and in 1464 La Orden de Calatrava will impose its jurisdiction over the town.

In 1544 Carlos V gave the town part of his municipal area.

Belmez Gastronomy

Fried veal with garlic and oil from the town.

Cold meats (black pudding, ham, spiced sausage similar to salami “salchichón”, chorizo). Migas. Andrajos con liebre.

Porridges, ajuarina and sopas en ajo (consommé with hard boiled egg, garlic and sometimes bread).

Sweets: Pestiños (honey-coated pastry). Bread rolls. Fairy cakes. Sponge cakes.

How to get there

You have to exit Córdoba and continue in: N-432 for 65 kilometres. Alleyaway of El Vacar. Then you get Bélmez.
