Benaocaz – The Fountain Over There

The “Fountain over there” is located in the Avenida María Cristina, in the Andalusian town of Benaocaz, province of Cadiz.

The whole of the Fountain over there is formed by a fountain and a trough for the cattle and constitutes one of the patrimonial elements of Benaocaz less known. It gives its name to the street where is located and is a place prequented by the residents of the town for decades.

At present, the Fuente de Allá (Fountain over there) is part of the water supply network of Benaocaz but until the seventies, when the tap water  was installed inside the houses, the villagers came to this source to load their pitchers and be able to use that water in their homes. The whole of the fountain and the trough became therefore a center of social activity for the municipality.

The fountain, baroque style, was built under the reign of Carlos III, is made of stone blocks an has four pipes, a pool and three steps. The trough, on the other hand, consists of five stonework pillars joined together and distributed in a staggered manner. The whole is crowned by a stone cross.

The existence of this type of watering hole usually indicates some importance in the cattle activity.
