Benitagla – Sierra de los Filabres

Benitagla is a town located in La Sierra de Los Filabres, in a rough and semi-arid landscape full of almond and olive trees and where it is situated a small urban area, whose only one interesting building is the Parish Church. The municipality limits with Alcudia de Monteagud, Benizalón y Cóbdar.

The felling, demarcation and marking the boundary of the town was carried in 1572, in the general regulations given by Felipe II in order to distribute the Moriscos’ goods left after the uprising. This process was carried out by La Junta de Población de la Real Chancillería de Granada and with the bordering Town Councils of Cóbdar, Binimia and Alhabía, these last two were deserted and about to disappear the remains of houses.

The houses of the town, according to the Libro de Apeo are «carved in flagstone and earth, and in slate tiles », that is, they have not changed anything from the XVI century. All the constructions are very similar, they do not distort the environment, with whitewashing brilliant walls (with a special splendour in summer), with shed roofs and covered with tiles, one of the few changes in this time.

During the Moorish age, before the uprising, it had 60 inhabitants; all of them were Morisco, none old Christian, even the clergyman who celebrated mass came outside. It had 61 houses that after the abandoning could be inhabited again 50, what was not normal, after the uprising, the abandoning and the wait of the inhabitants were deteriorated.

Due to its situation, far away of the ancestral home and its poorness of lands, in Benitagla there were only six settlers, without forgetting the legal trials undertaken by one of them, known like Botia, and its ten years late in the arrival. In view of this shortage, it was necessary to bypass the rules announced by the King for the distribution of the Moorish’s lands and they were given to the inhabitants of the neighbouring towns.

However, the risk had no importance. On the other hand, the cattle raising was not very interesting, because there were only draught animals to work in the field and some examples of yard for the gazing, contradicting to the lecturer Torres. This economic activity had no importance both in Benitagla and in the surrounding area, except Tahalí, Arab name of Tahal, because it had not enough stretch of lands in common usage not enough to dedicate the cattle raising.

Another economic activity that is documented is the production of silk fabrics, that, at first from the beginning of the Middle Ages in Almería had been in the hands of the Mudejars and later in the hands of the Morisco, without being interrupted by the Christian conquest, although Benizalón stood out more than Benitagla in this activity.

Nowadays, both the silk industry and the cattle raising has disappeared, even the draught animals. It is only continued with the agriculture, the main source of wealth, despite the reduction of the cultivated area and the fire two years ago, that forced the inhabitants of Benitagla to vacate their houses. The most important crops are the almond and olice trees, although we also can find the vine to elaborate homemade wines.

Town Planning

A small urban area and without any modern construction.

The main dishes in Benitaglia are varied vegetable stews, porridge (gachas) made with maize and stock made with tomatoes, roast peppers, chopped garlic and oil. And the Spanish omelette, another delicious dish.
A dish called «talvina», that seems it does not like children, because it is not «very light», that is cooked fried lightly with tomato, water and flour. This mixture is beatted and boiled.
