Bornos – Ribera´s Castle Palace
Ribera´s Castle Palace
The Ribera´s Castle Palace is located in the Plaza Alcalde José González, near the Town Hall, the Santo Domingo de Guzman Church and the Gardens of the Palace of Los Ribera, in the Andalusian town of Bornos, Cadiz.
The Ribera´s Castle Palace started as an Arab fort, from which nowadays only some sections of the wall and the Tribute tower are preserved.
The current appearance is something we owe to the Ribera family, who developed a classical palace motivated by sir Fadrique´s trip to Jerusalem between 1518-1520.
The building is structured on two floors which are distributed around a cloister that has stilted arches over which a high gallery with the same type o arches and a pointed balustrade is raised. It is important to emphasize the cloister fountain which is decorated with the Ribera family emblem, as the inscription that links both floors, and the high gallery décor.
Beautiful Renaissance gardens complete the building, inspired by the High Belvedere in Rome, in which we find a loggia, crowned by a frieze with metopes and triglyphs, unique in Andalusia. The loggia was used as an outdoors art gallery.
