Cartajima – Arenas Chestnut Tree

The Arenas Chestnut Tree is located just outside the town of Cartajima, going down C/ Ancha (street).

The chestnut tree (Castanea sativa) is notable for its size and span. It is 17 metre tall and over seven metres around. According to the information given by the residents of Cartajima, it´s about 300 years old.

The tree takes its name from its former owner. Curiously it´s the custom in Cartajima to bequeath or sell the trees separately from the ground in which they´ve grown.

The chestnut tree is next to the road known as the Camino del Molino Real which leads to Igualeja, which has made this enormous tree a landmark and meeting place for both locals and travellers.
