Cartajima – El Pilar Fountain

This is a public fountain. An old water hole of natural spring origin used as a rest area by mule drivers and pedestrians on their way to and from the fields and other towns around Cartajima. It is located at the intersection of the Arroyo del Riachuelo (Riachuelo´s Stream) with the path from Estepona to Ronda, 1 km away from Cartajima´s town centre.

Refurbished in 2015, the water flowing from this fountain is greatly appreciated by all the inhabitants. It is formed by a 3 meters long and 1 meter wide rectangular shaped limestone sink an a smaller one attached to its end. The whole piece is concluded with a small wall styled as a facade, from which the flowing water derives, keeping both sinks full at all times. This allows ranchers to give drink to mules and cattle. The origing date is unknown but it is very possible to be of Arabic roots.

During the 2015 refurbishment, a dining area was open. It was created with mill rocks found near and old quarry and wooden benches.

Other fountains  of touristic and cultural interest near the town centre: Fuente de los Peces (Fountain of the Fish), Fuente del Pozo (Well´s Fountain) and Fuente Ayón (Ayon´s Fountain).
