Cartajima – Fountain of the Fishes

The Fountain of the Fishes is located on the outskirts of the village, on the Camino del Arroyo Blanco (White Stream Road), which joins Cartajima with Alpandeire.

This is a fountain of Moorish origin which still has the merlons from the original work, despite the deterioration suffered over the years. The water is held in a vaulted cistern that lets the water pour into the fountain and through to its left. Some traces of the indentations left by the pitchers used by the villagers to collect water are still perceptible.

As well as being used for the domestic provision of water, the fountain was also used by cattle, as the through shows, and also for agriculture, watering a small vegetable garden right by the fountain.

The name comes from the fact that, in recent times, there were fish in the basin.
