Comares Castle
Comares Castle
The Comares Castle is located in the Andalusian town of Comares, next to the cemetery. Easily accessed fro the Plaza Balcón de la Axarquia.
The castle, from the Arab period, is partially destroyed and heavily masked by contemporary constructions. The only witnesses to its existence are two towers (large bakery and small bakery) and scattered fragments of walls. The use of its site as an urban cemetery has had a resounding impact on the visual transformation of its premises, where there is also strong wind erosion.
The remains of the tower have a masonry plinth with brick verdugadas, the cladding of the central body and the crown having been completely lost. Inside the cemetery, a cistern was preserved in a good state of conservation.
In the zoning carried out, the entire area of the urban area is included, because although the castle or Hisn is located in the cemetery area first, after the High Middle Ages the fortress had to extend around the current urban area. The lack of research, both in terms of historiographical sources and archaeological data, prevent us from getting an exact idea of the configuration of the fortress in late medieval times. However, the presence of stretches of wall such as the one located next to Calle Agua or the now-defunct Puerta de Málaga, or of towers such as the so-called Tahona Chica, shows that the walled enclosure must have surrounded the entire modern urban area, which, by On the other hand, it preserves a trace of Islamic tradition.
