El Real de la Jara Castle

The origen of the El Real de la Jara Castle, like the rest of constructions of this type, lies in the natural conditions of the place where it is located, when located at points of optimal observation.

The castle is located in an elevated position north of the Sevillian town of El Real de la Jara.

The Sierra played a fundamental role during the romanization for the defense of the borders. With the Arabs, all of Andalusia was dotted with defensive constructions and with the Christian Conquest, the Muslim settlers barricaded themselves in the Sierra Morena with the purpose of controlling the steps on the Meseta.

Little by little, and once Seville was taken by the Christians, Sierra Morena lost its value as a strategic place. While the efforts of Castilla were to conquer the kingdom of Granada, the kingdom of Portugal to take over the western part of Andalusia. To avoid the advance fo the Portuguese on this front, Sancho IV el Bravo, in the thirteenth century, ordered the reconstruction of old abandoned fortresses.

For this reason, the El Real de la Jara Castle is a clear testimony of the historical evolution of these places and jewel of the historical-artistic heritage of the Natural Park.
