Esparragal Dam & Reservoir – Gerena
Esparragal Dam was built in 1970 on the bed of the Encarnacion River, in the municipality of Gerena, province of Sevilla, Andalucia.
Esparragal is a gravity arch dam type with a height from foundations of 28 meters and a crest lenght of 117 meters.
The Esparragal Reservoir belong to the Cuenca Hidrografica del Guadalquivir and has a capacity of 2 hm3.
Uses of the Reservoir
The municipality of Gerena is situated in the northwest quadrant of the province of Seville, occupying an area of transition between the comarca (region) de Aljarafe and the foothills of Sierra Morena. In 1996 its population was 5405 inhabitants. The main nucleus is situated in a prime position on a granite hillock of 89 metres, from which can be controlled a large area.
The Iberian root name has been mentioned by the mythological shepherd-king Geryon. It could also come from the Latin word Lerenna, which the Arabs called Gerea. Read more….
