Garcia Watchtower – Almería

The Garcia Watchtower is located near the Torregarcia Bech, a few meters from the Roman Salting Factory and the Virgen del Mar Hermitage, Cabo de Gata Nijar Natural Park, Almeria.

The Garcia Watchtower was carried out in the second half of the 16th century, during the reign of Felipe II.

The original function of this watchtower ws the watch and signal transmission for the defense of the coast against the Berber pirates, who at the time made numerous incursions. This tower was connected with others visually. By campfires at night and smoked by day, the torreros communicated the presence of danger to other towers and towns. This procedure of giving alarm was typically Muslim. After a repair in the XVIII century, and to serve as support for the surveillance work of the Civil Guard, it was anandoned for decades. At the end of the ieghties it was restored by the Ministry of Culture of the Junta de Andalucia.
