Gaucin Viewpoint

Gaucin Viewpoint is located just outside the town of Gaucín, towards Ronda.

Gaucín’s name comes from Gair-Guazam, which means “strong rock”. The town is located on the slopes of Monte Hacho from which the Estrecho, the Rock of Gibraltar, Ceuta, and the Serranía de Ronda in general are overlooked.

Its Castillo del Águila, which stands tall, was first Roman, then Arab and finally Christian. Next to its walls the famous Guzmán el Bueno, hero of Tarifa, died. Next to the castle stands the Santo Niño Chapel, where there is an image venerated throughout the region.

In addition to the fortress, it is advisable to walk its streets enjoying the most genuine popular architecture.

Also of admiration are the Church of San Sebastián, the Fuente de los Seis Caños and the Ethnographic Museum.

Back in 1850, the traveler Josephine de Brinckmann, following this same route, wrote:
“Towards evening I approached Gaucín, we were at the foot of the mountain, on top of which this small village is built. It took at least an hour and a half to reach it along the lousy path traced on the mountain, through the rocks.

While admiring the picturesque beauty of that nature at sunset, I had to praise the robust legs of my horse, which gallantly climbed that kind of ladder, as if it were reaching a paradise.

Gaucín is one of the most unique towns I have seen so far, both for its elevated position and for itself…”

For his part, Merimée, a romantic writer in 19th century France, places Gaucín and his mountains at the nerve center of his novel “Carmen”, places that he cites no less than twenty times.

“Carmen -he writes- provided me with a civilian suit with which I left Seville without being recognized. In Jerez he introduced me to Doncaiere (head of smugglers) who incorporated me into his gang. We left for Gaucín where I met Carmen who had made an appointment there”.

From the Mirador de Gaucín you can see impressive views of the Genal Valley, the Castle-Fortress of Águila and in the distance mountains and peaks as impressive as Alto Porrejón, Anícola, Cerro del Castellón, Los Reales, Silla de los Huesos, the Puerto de los Guardas, Sierra Crestellina and Sierra de Casares.
