Jimena de la Frontera – Canal of the Royal Artillery Factory

Canal and Factory of Canyons of the Hozgarganta River

Under the reign of Carlos III, there was a boom in the steel industry and the construction of military equipment, due to the numerous conflicts that occurred during the eighteenth century. Gibraltar was a hot zone, and in Jimena the Royal Artillery was built, coinciding with the siege of the Peñón (the Rock) between 1779 and 1783. Thi swas the time of maximum operation of this foundry, the seventh that was built in Spain which stop working in 1789.

The main function of this industry was the construction of ammunition and armament for said siege and for this a large amount of water was needed, especially to move the air bellows of the foundry. The cao or canal transported water from the Hozgarganta River to the blast furnaces. Also near Jimena, in San Pablo de Buceite iron mines had bee discovered, which would supply the factory with raw materials and the fuel used would come from the large forest masses that, even today, can be seen in the mountains of Jimena de la Frontera.

This cao (canal), which is more than 650 meters long, is built with sandstone blocks, uncarved stones joined by mortar and even solid sandstone carved in the same course of the cao.

The seasonal nature of our rivers cause the closure of  the “bomb factory” (as it is known locally), since it does not have regular water, adding also the political vicissitudes of the time and the poor quality of the minerals found.
