La Puebla del Río

The Guadalquivir not only determines the name of La Puebla del Río but constitutes its real reason. Located to the southwest of the capital and about 15 miles of it, is located in the region of the marshes (Comarca de las Marismas), being the fundamental basis of its economy, the cultivation of rice.

The recent separation from the municipality of Villafranca del Guadalquivir, has been reduced its municipal area in 11.2 km2 and population of 6,022 inhabitants, which at 1,996, the population of the municipality of La Puebla del Río amounted to 10,650 inhabitants, concentrated in more than 90% in the core and the rest responding to spread.
Because of its fertile lands there have been cultivated over the ages.

During the Neolithic age it have been a major settlement, as evidenced by the archaeological remains of “los silos”, the most important area of the Iberian Peninsula, only comparable with those of Lower Egypt.

It belonged to the Tartesians with the name of Massia Tarseion because it should be an important place of Tartessian culture.

During Roman times it was an important commercial area.

We do not know much about the period of Al-Andalus. After the Christian conquest it would enjoy the Forum and franchises of Sevilla.

Before the attacks of the Benimerines, Fernando III provides a fortification that protected the city of Sevilla by the Guadalquivir. The town is known as La Guardia. Alfonso X repopulated the area and granted a Town Charter as jurisdiction of its inhabitants. From this moment, it was renamed Puebla and became official in 1916.

Between the years 1925 to 1930 it was introduced the cultivation of rice.
