Lebrija Castle

The Lebrija Castle is located a the Cuesta del Castillo Street, next to the Juan “El Norieto” Square and the Shrine of Nuestra Señora del Castillo, just few minutes from Santa Maria de la Oliva Church, the Old Cabildo and Cilla Municipal and the Santa Maria la Piedad Hospital, in the Andalusian town of Lebrija.

Nowadays all that remains of the medieval castle are some parts of the wall and two defensive towers. Its origin dates back to the Almohad period (the first half of the 13th century), with important alterations and reconstruction during the 14th and 15th centuries, after the Christian Reconquest.

The fortification consisted of three parts: the citadel or high site, with an interior wall whose highlight was the now missing main tower of the castle (“torre del homenaje”); the intermediate site, where the main square was located and which today is an open area that includes the Shrine of Nuestra Señora del Castillo; and the low site, which is currently taken up by private buildings with one of the towers of the castle among them, still visible from Sochantre Juan Porté Streeet.
