Lebrija – Shrine of Nuestra Señora del Castillo
Shrine of Nuestra Señora del Castillo
The Shrine of Nuestra Señora del Castillo is one of the most important examples of Mudejar architecture in Lebrija. This Christian building was erected next to the antique main square of the castle in the second half of the 14th century. The temple didn´t suffers many changes during its history. Its original design, almost the same as the current one, consisted of three naves separated by axis of horseshoe pointed arches, two entrances and flat apse with presbytery, sacristy and chapel. During the 18th century two lateral chapels and an entry were added, completing the place. The combination of elements and architectonical solutions, based on Gothic, Mudejar and Baroque styles, emphasizes this place where the Virgen Del Castillo, a wood carving of the end of the 14th century and, Lebrija patron saint, resides.
