Los Palacios y Villafranca

The town of Los Palacios y Villafranca is located in the southwest quadrant of the province of Sevilla, belonging to the Bajo Guadalquivir. In 1996, it had a population of 31,718 inhabitants, of whom 90% were in the main town. The municipal area has three other public entities directly related to agricultural activity: the towns of colonization of the Trobal, Maribáñez and Los Chapatales, arising in 1.970.

It comes back from the union of two municipalities.
Los Palacios has a possible Tartessian origin.
During Roman times it was called Searotinos and could mint its own currency.
In the period of Al-Andalus, it was called Zaracatín.
With the Christian conquest it was abandoned and converted into a hunting ground.
King Peter I of Castile would have the pleasure palace of the Atayuela. Then, it would pass to the Duchy of Arcos.

Villafranca in turn was founded by Alfonso XI and assigned to Don Diego López de Arnedo. It was called Villafranca because it was founded with the privilege of being tax free, “free town.”

Until Carlos III joined the crown, it remained in the hands of the same family.
These two towns remained separate until 1836 when joined to form one. Until then, they were separated by a street that had a stone cross which served as a tribunal to settle disputes arising between the two towns.
