Luque Castle

Luque Castle is located in the Cerro del Castillo, near the Chapel of Rosario, in the town of Luque, province of Cordoba, a couple of minutes from the impressive Parish Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asuncion.

The fort is located on a cliff at the foot of the town of Luque.

The fortress are two towers, one north and one to the southeast, with an attached enclosure, joined by several canvas walls that today are in a state fo ruin.

The most important element is the tower of the castle, it is in the extreme noth and covers an area of 12×7 m. Its outer walls have a thickness of 1,90 m and has two floors, each compartmentalized into two rooms or chambers.

Access to the ground floor from the courtyard through a hole made in the southeast wall capped by dome inside us flared brick and whose difference of 1,20 m. be saved by a ramp or stairs now disappeared.

After this task, we find a kind of landing from which begins a staircase to the upper floor, which still retained some steps and on the other side there is a hole that served as lateral support to the stairs and door entrance to the rooms on the ground floor that are separated by transverse arch semicircular brick vaults, brick upper floor slab mmissing.

Whith brick vaults cover is upstairs, with the same distribution as the ground floor, although this has gaps in the northwest wall to beat the esplanade, and north wall to provide light and ventialtion to the stairs.

The fort was built by order of Muhammamd I to 879.

Luque Castle is under the protection of the general declaration of the Decree of April 22, 1949, and Law 16/1985 on Spanish Historical Heritage. In 1993 the Andalusian government gave special recognition to the castles of Andalusia.

Arco Toral: is named each of the arcs on which rests a dome.
