Marmolejo belongs to the region of La Campiña that is located in the west of it, bordering on Córdoba.
The northern area of the municipal district is full of woodland (Sierra Morena); a sector of this area integrates with the Sierras de Andújar Natural Park. The southern area have the cultivated lands where we can find mostly olive groves, although in the fertile lowlands of the River Guadalquivir have many importance the irrigated lands, such as the maize, cotton, the lucerne and a wide range of horticultural products.
The stockbreeding is very important due to the presence of a big bovine farming with a semi-stabling milk exploitation. The economy in Marmolejo is based on the agriculture, the stockbreeding, the forest and hunting use, and the hotel trade connected with the passenger traffic from the Motorway of Andalucía. We can emphasize its Church of Nuestra Señora de la Paz, built between XIV and XVIII centuries.
The origin of Marmolejo comes from the Carthaginians Period. It was founded by them in 462 B.C. with the name of Utica, in memory of another town that was in Africa.
From 288, it was see. In 923 Santa Eugenia, a native of Córdoba, suffered martyrdom.
In 1791 Carlos IV awarded it the title of Villa.
Marmolejo will be famous above all for its medicinal waters. In the middle of XVIII century the French doctor called Tissot would write in one of his books the usefulness of these waters for the cure of different illness.
