Osuna – El Coto de las Canteras

El Coto de las Canteras is located just few minutes from the Collegiate Church of Our Lady of the Assumption, from the Church and Tower of La Merced and the University, in the Andalusian town of Osuna.

Popularly known as the ´Petra of Andalusia`, El Coto de las Canteras sits on the grounds of the Ancient Urso from which the stone was removed to constructions since before Roman occupation. Inside, there is a magnificent natural auditorium used for celebrations, concerts, cultural events, etc.

Certainly, this rocky substrate has been used as a quarry continuously since at least the Iberian civilization, although it seems that its exploitation had to be intensified as a result of the important constructive work developed by the IV Count of Ureña in the sixteenth century, to the 60`s of the last century that is stopped working on this.
