Pizarra – San Pedro Apostol Parish Church

The San Pedro Apostol Parish Church is located at C/ Puerta de la Guardia with C/ San Pedro (streets), at the Plaza de la Iglesia (square), a minute from the Counts of Puerto Hermoso Palace, in the historical center of Pizarra.

At the end of the 15th century, the early Church of San Pedro was ordered to be built by Diego Romero (founder of Lugar de la Pizarra) in order to meet the needs of his servants and settlers.

During the 17th century, an increase in the population (more than 200 neighbours) resulted in the construction of the current temple on the previous site, becoming a Parish Church (with its own priest) in 1652. Before that year, it remained attached to the Iglesia Mayor (Main Church) of Alora.

This church, erected in Mudejar style, has one single nave and a artistic coffered ceiling. The square planned tower is divided into three parts: the first two were made of masonry, while the third one (where the bells are) was made f brick. In 1862, the bell tower was added thanks to the Compañia del Ferrocarril Málaga-Córdoba. In the same period of time, the church was provided with a new entrance door and its rose windows and stained glass windows, which are still preserved, were brought from Saragossa.

The temple was plundered during the Peninsular War (Spanish War of Independence against the French) and the disturbances in 1931 and 1936, causing the virtual disappearance of its belongings, images and ornaments. Nowadays, nearly everything in its interior was acquired from 1939 on, thanks to the aid of the Counts of Puerto Hermoso and the people of Pizarra.

Marian image of Nuestra Señora de la Fuensanta

According to legend, in 1566, a mud-brick wall collapsed and a niche housing the image of Our Lady of the Conception was found. It was sent to Francisco Blanco Salcedo, bishop of Málaga, who knew the desire of the local people to keep it in Pizarra. For that reason, he ordered to send it back and erect a hermitage in the same place where the statue appeared. During its construction, an excellent quality water spring flowed, given the image the advocation of “Fuente Santa”

Festivity of Nuestra Señora de la Fuensanta: On 15th August, taking place the traditional “Rifa” of Nuestra Señora de la Fuensanta, a religious tradition designated a Fiesta of Tourist Interest in Andalusia.
