Historical Data

The Saladavieja Wathtower was called Estepona because of its proximity of 1 km to this town. It is also referred to as Azala Vieja, Çelada Bieja, Sal vieja, Sala Vieja, Salavieja or Torre de la Doncella.

It has a frustoconical shape that rests on a square paw with a side of 7.60 meters. Its perimeter is 23.70 meters, its diameter at the base is 7.52 meters, rising to 6.60 meters on the terrace and a height of over 11 metres. The escarpment of its outer wall has a slope of 6.03%. Its base is solid, presenting on it a chamber whose entrance is located on the north side at 7.55 meters from the ground. This chamber features a small square surveillance window on the south side. Internally it would have a fireplace and access stairs to the terrace. The latter presents a non-uniform parapet (lowered on the south side); likewise, protruding from it appears a surveillance booth and remains of a machicolation over the access. Its factory is masonry with vermilion stone, using brick in the gaps, the entrance arch, the vault of the interior chamber, the machicolation and the sentry box.

It had the capacity for a cannon. The terrace has an outer diameter of 6 meters; The rest of the machicolation and a sentry box from the end of the 18th century remain in it.

Its conservation is very good, only some stones of the southern front are missing. On the opposite side a sub-housing was built.

Its visual range is 8 km, at 5 it maintained communication with the El Padron Tower and at 3 with the Arroyo Vaquero (Temboury Álvarez, 1975: 63). Read more…
