Sanlucar de Guadiana
Sanlucar de Guadiana is located on the left bank of the Guadiana River on the Portuguese border, belongs to the Judicial District of Ayamonte, and is 69 km from Huelva. It has an area of 96.5 km2 with a population of 393 inhabitants, according to official figures 01/01/1998.
Sanlúcar, a river port, opens to the sea from the River Guadiana. The Guzmans, lords of Sanlúcar de Barrameda, brought their domain here, and also brought the name of that other town with them.
Sanluqueña economy has been traditionally linked to the Guadiana River, a major trade route until the middle of this century. Already in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries the river was being used to transport timber, wine, wheat and fish. This economy is supplemented by the use of meadow livestock, forestry and traditional agriculture.
The great importance of Sanlúcar de Guadiana is the natural port which has provided entry and exit to the lands of the plateau from the Atlantic for a long time, as confirmed by the existence of the Castillo de San Marcos.
