Nuestra Señora del Rosario Church

Nuestra Señora del Rosario Church is located in C/ La Rosa with C/ Puente (streets), just few minutes from the Santa Fe de Mondujar Watchtower, in the Andalusian town of Santa Fe de Mondújar, Almería province, Spain.

Construction of the temple began in the mid-16th century and was the subject of several reforms since 1671. There are reports that in 1577 the carpenter Juan Fernández and the bricklayer Juan Alonso Jiménez worked on it.

It is a Mudejar church with a basilica floor plan with three naves separated by semicircular arches that rest on chamfered pillars. The central nave has a roof with a Mudejar-style truss frame with little decoration. The main chapel is covered with a groin vault.

It has two covers; one of them is a simple opening in the wall and the other is linteled with pillars and finished off with a cornice. The bell tower has a square floor plan with the body of bells with semicircular arches framed by pilasters.

In the 18th century, the lateral naves were enlarged and new changes were introduced that would affect the central nave and the bell tower. After the restoration that was carried out in 1995, the Ministry of Culture of the Junta de Andalucía financed the restoration work on the main façade (2002), which suffered from considerable cracks in its walls as well as progressive deterioration in stucco and finishes.

This temple acquires a great role in the celebration of Candelaria in Santa Fe de Mondújar, since it is the space where all the acts of the ritual take place. Outside the Church, just at the entrance, the blessing of the candles and the offering of the pigeons take place. While inside the temple the cake raffle and the children’s presentation take place.
