Setenil de las Bodegas Castle

The Turret was built during the Arab occupation, probable in the Almohade period (12th and 13th centuries). It was the main defence structure of the town and an important obstacle to its conquest as narrated in the Chronicles of John the Second of Castille. It was seized form Moslem control by the troops of the Catholic King and Queen on the 21st September, 1484, after seven attempts. The Turret is the only remaining and most outstanding vestige of the old fortress together with the reservoir beneath it and the scanty remains of the walls that surrounded the crag where it was built to protect the mediaeval town.

The fortifications were built in inaccessible geographical locations similar to others found in the district and had two towers for defence. The whole area of La Peña (the crag) was fortified with streches of rough, rugged wall. There was smooth stonework in the areas where the most conflict occurred and on the corners, which only have one entrance. These walls protected the Moslem inhabitants form belligerent attacks.

The tower is prism-shaped with a square base and has three floors: the ground floor has a room covered with a barrel vault and is accessible from outside. The first floor has access by stairs and is covered with a low vault on embossed ogival ribs, one foot wide and made of bricks placed alternately on horizontal and vertical planes, each ogive has a semicircular arch for additional support. The second floor repeats the same structure, having access from a lateral staircase. This floor is now in a very deteriorated state as the keystone and most of the vault has disappeared.

The reservoir is a subterranean construction and is partially excavated in the rock on the site. It is rectangular in shape and is covered with two halfbarrel vaults separated by a row of pillars with semicircular arches.
