Suflí
Suflí – Sierra de los Filabres
Suflí is a small village, retiring and quiet, belonging to the Alto Almanzora and located in the Sierra de los Filabres, in little cultivated highlands due to the difficulty of the terrain and lack of water.
The municipality limits with Armuña de Almanzora, Purchena, Sierro y Laroya
The population was never very numerous. The first reliable data available are those collected when the expulsions of the Moors and Moriscos and subsequent repopulation. They are totally accurate data and are kept, both in the felling books and in the copy that is in the Royal Chancery of Granada. The XVI century was a time of general depopulation throughout the Kingdom of Granada, because the Castilian settlers were not enough to fill the space left by the expelled.
Suflí was with a very small population, which was recovering very slowly until, at the beginning of the XX century, it had more than 800 inhabitants, its all-time high. With the successive migrations to the booming economic centres in all Spain during the 30s and 50s, and with the exodus to the coast of this past decade, the present census have been reduced again to a quarter mile.
The logic migratory makes this population, also, has an aged structure, a “pyramid” little pyramidal, with plenty of retired people and a shortage of young people.
Farmers can count on your fingers, and with a simply amateur dedication. There is one bar, with particular and random hours, and a simple trade dedicated to self-sufficiency.
Nowadays, few people, learned onlookers from the outside world or excited and deserving players, have been incorporated into the everyday life of Suflí and shape its “hard”, dynamic and current population centre.
A first approach at Suflí passes through them. Out of consideration for the hierarchy, but reversing the order due to age, we find Juan Cuevas, the present mayor, a young, lively and with infectious activity.
The local and provincial policy of public works is noticeable in recent years in the urban, sporting and social facilities. It is something new, after decades of decline. Since the beginning of the century, when they were rebuilt (almost became new) the parish church and the chapel of La Cruz, in addition to some ancestral home, had not undertaken a policy of works like the present ones.
Of course the small size of the town has made itself having to work outside their county, in the neighbouring and booming Comarca del Mármol, one of the basic sites of the industry in Almería. But this is not new, in the XVIII century there was only one tavern, two bakeries and a mill.
