The Droving Paths of La Janda

The route follows the path of the Cañada Real de Marchantiega or Jerezana, the most important droving route in the region of La Janda. Along this walk there are water wells, springs, resting areas and other constructions used during the migration of herds. It is a route through the valley of the river Alamo from which we can see the forest wealth of Mediterranean species in their full magnificence.

The itinerary starts at the car park of the Chapel of the Saints, a 14th century sanctuary which is one of the most popular in the region. It has a remarkable courtyard decorated with flower pots and ceramic tiles, as well as votive offerings hanging on the walls of the main nave. The path descends on a dirt track to a crossroads and passes an impressive water well with a round trough on the left, The Droving Paths of La Jandawe take the droving path descending along the meanders of the river Alamo, amongst Holm oaks and Mediterranean bushes. It is a typical reserve for flora and fauna, the aquatic birds and birds of prey being particularly noticeable.

After passing under the Jerez-Arcos motorway, we continue straight on, along the sandy area of the river, crossing the Ventorrillo de Tablado and before we get to Cortijos de Pepino, we turn left and go across the ford in the river. The ground here can be very band in rainy periods, but his also adds to the natural riches. It is the most natural and evocative stretch of this droving path.

Taking the compacted-soil path of Cordel de las Hoyas, we go round the livestock farms between the hills, which are covered with European Fan palm, different species of oaks and wild aromatic bushes. The route finishes in the pastoral area of Fuente de la Higuera, an old resting area and one of the springs that have been channelled to bring water close to the path. The return route is on the same path, parallel to the river Alamo, finishing at the Chapel of the Saints.
