Trail Charco del Canalón
Trail Charco del Canalón PR-A 280 – Istán
This walk takes you to the best-known natural freshwater pool in the municipal district and perhaps one of the most impressive places on the Verde river. It is a very easy walk, suitable for all the family. However, bear in mind that the walk described is point to point, so it will be twice as long if you plan to walk back.
The walk begins from the Plaza del Cha and follows a concrete road, the old road between Istán and Tolox. Shortly after starting out, cross the Río Molinos stream using the footbridge and continue along the track through citrus groves and avocado trees.
As you leave the orchards behind, these give way to pine woodland and patches of Mediterranean forest.
Remember to stop from time to time to enjoy time to time to enjoy the viws of Istán perched on the mountainsde and the orchards below it, like a green oasis at its feet. Leave the dirt track by taking as small path on the left that joins the main dirt track leading to the freshwater pool itself. Be especially careful of any vehicles coming and going particulary in the summertime, a time of year when the traffic can be rather busy on this route. Continue along the track, down to the meadows by the river. Follow another very short footpath until you reack a dirt track that is lined by cork oaks and which leads you to the pool after fording the Verde River.
