Trail Istán – Marbella

This route takes you to the Parque de Nagüeles in Marbella, around three kilometers from the town centre. The walk is not particularly difficult in terms of gradient, buit it is quite a long way, and it is of course a point to point walk, so remember to think about the return trip if necessary. Start by taking the lane next to the water tank leading to the chapel. Leaving the recreational area to your right, walk downhill in search of the road. Walk along the road, being particularly careful of any traffic, before taking a footpath some 500 metres further down. From this point, the route takes you along the western slopes of Sierra Blanca, always keeping the reservoir to the west and the sea to the south.

The walk alternates between footpaths and dirt tracks surrounded by purely Mediterranean vegetation, including the enormous carob trees you will find along the way. The route first takes you to the base of the Peñón Bermejo, a large reddish coloured rock face, after which you will walk along the Monchalbán and del Cura gorges, to finally reach the Cerros del Lago urbanization. From this housing development, simply walk along a stretch of mule path until you reach the dirt track. Walk uphill, passed the Placas del Cura rock face, an area where it is not uncommon to see mountain climbers. Eventually you arrive at the old quarry that is currently being restored. Leave the quarry to your left as you walk downhill. You will reach a tarmacked road leading to the Parque de Nagüeles.
