Arch of the Village – Utrera

The Arch of the Village (Arco de la Villa) is located in the town center of Utrera, Sevilla province.

The walled enclosure of Utrera surrounded the Santiago and Santa María neighbourhoods. It had four gates: the one of Seville, in the Altozano Square, that of San Juan, the one of Jerez and this we refer to, the only one preserved. The others were demolished when they lost their function of controlling the access within the walls and due to the urban growth. It is a robust construction agreeing with its defensive function. A painted Gothic arch gives way to the interior of the city. A small temple was built in the first floor added in the Baroque period.
