Villages in Granada

Válor, Alpujarra Alta

Valor is part of the Sierra Nevada Natural Park, and sits on the south facing slopes. Wedged between two rocky cliffs of the High Alpujarra, Valor enjoys the essential characteristics that define the image of the Alpujarra villages, with the unique architecture of the houses, perfectly suited to the broken terrain and climate of the area, which are arranged in narrow streets very reminiscent of the Moorish past, and each year, in September, this is shown in the ‘Fiesta de Moros y Cristianos,’ one of the most important fiestas of all Andalusia.

The old Arab villages of Nechite and Medina Alfahar are under the jurisdiction of the municipality of Valor.

Valor borders the municipalities of Lanteira, Aldeire, Nevada, Ugíjar and Alpujarra de la Sierra .

Archaeological remains have been found suggesting the existence of human settlements in this region in the Bronze Age and during the Roman Empire. Still, the origins of this town, first as a village, date back to the stage of Muslim occupation.

After the Christian conquest, the pressure exerted by the new masters of the Moors brought about the rise of the nobleman Fernando de Córdoba y Valor. He was crowned here as king of the Alpujarras with the name of Aben Humeya, but was overthrown by his cousin, Ben Aboo and later assassinated.

When Don Juan de Austria put down the Moorish uprising and the Moors were expelled, Valor was repopulated by Christians from Jaén.
