Viewpoint of the Retortillo Reservoir

The Viewpoint of the Retortillo Reservoir is located on the right bank  of the Retortillo River Reservoir in the Andalusian muncipality of La Puebla de los Infantes (Sevilla), at an altitude of 188 m above the sea level. The dam was built in 1970 and the reservoir has a capacity of 61,2 hm2 and occupyin an area as normal maximum level of 517 hectares.

La Puebla de los Infantes History

The different archaeological surveys that have been carried out have confirmed the existence of settlements in the final moments of prehistory (late Bronze Age) and in Roman times (from Augustus to the Lower Empire). Some authors, such as E. Flores y Cortes, identified Puebla de los Infantes with a municipality in Bética called “Celti”, an argument based on the coincidence of distances in the itinerary of the Antonine Emperor from Écija to Constantina. Other authors placed it at the crossroads of the terms of Constantina, Las Navas and Puebla, such as Fernández Guerra or Saavedra. The site found in the urban nucleus is identified by Pizarro as a prehistoric place. According to Guseme it would be Canabulla, an old exploitation of silver lead and copper.

Remains of important “villae” have been located in the municipal term from Roman times, among which it is worth highlighting: Cañuelo or Tejero; as well as Roman settlements around mining operations. In the medieval times of Muslim domination, La Puebla would not be more than a village then called Cañebolo. The highest part of the town refers us to this time, both for its appearance and for the names that are preserved: La Medina (city), la Zajareta (small green area). Read more…
