Villanueva del Río y Minas

The municipality of Villanueva del Río y Minas is located in the northern half of the province of Seville, in the transitional space between the regions of the Sierra Norte and Vega del Guadalquivir. In 1996 its population amounted to 5,953 inhabitants, of which approximately 4/5 parts residing in the central area, Villanueva de las Minas. Among the other entities of population in the municipality we have to emphasize Villanueva del Río and Los Rosales.
The name of this village is Villanueva del Riío y Minas, with its capital in Villanueva de las Minas. It is set on 19 November 1944.

Between the IV and III centuries AC it was established a town that continued existing after the coming of the Romans. The town of Mulva must have had a short life but rich and sumptuous, thanks to the mines, so it could raise Munigua sanctuary.

In 1282, Alfonso X gives it the Town Charter and jurisdiction in real actions.

The foundation of the modern town is nonetheless in a fief of the dukes of Alba emerged in the XV century. In 1.494, it was awarded the title of Most Leal for its support in the fall of Granada.

In 1571, Felipe II sold the town to D. Fadrique Enríquez de Ribera. Then it was called Villanueva del Camino.

Las Minas, to five kilometres from Villanueva del Río, has its origin and economy based on the holdings of a coal basin, very active since the early XIX century. By decision of the Government’s Office ceased its operation in the year 1972.

How to get there

You have to exit Sevilla, take: A-3104 and pass near Brenes, then turn left: SE-128 and pass Tocina. In Carbonal, turn left: A-431 and continue to Villanueva del Río y Minas.
