Watcher of the Sierra de las Nieves, the Yunquera Watchtower was built during the Arab period in order to warn of the inland advance of the enemy troops, it is located in the highest part of the urban area of the town of Yunquera.
Towers like the one contemplated in the photo constituted a fast defensive sytem. By means of smoked or fires that were lit on the signal platform (roof of the building) they transmited the news of attack to the different towns and fortresses.
The aspet that presents in the actuality differs enough of the original one; and is that since its construction, more than five hundred years a go, it has suffered up to two reconstructions. The first was make two centuries ago, during the War of Independence (where the high command of the army that defende the Serrania de Ronda from the French invasion was installed).
The second remodeling of the Yunquera Watchtower, fortunately for more peaceful purposes, has been carried out in our days to prepare it as an information point. Thank to it, in addition to the important patrimonial element that it represents, the watchtower now offers you the opportunity to go further into the knowledge of the Natural Park.
In its original stte the tower state the tower was all stone, circular and with three floors.
